Attached above is a screenshot from my midterm evaluation on my first Level II Fieldwork at Methodist North Hospital. The last line of this feedback is what I am focusing on for meeting this competency. During the first 6 weeks of my fieldwork, I was in adult outpatient, however my fieldwork educator was an occupational therapist once a week at a Muscular dystrophy/ALS/Huntington's disease clinic. She would travel to this clinic on Wednesday each week and I would accompany her during these 6 weeks. This opportunity is something that I am so grateful to have been able to experience. I had never had the experience to see individuals who have these three diagnoses and it was wonderful to see an occupational therapist and physical therapist work together to provide the best care for these individuals. I feel as if people who have these neurodegenerative diseases are often underrepresented, due to the various characteristics they present with and the quick progressiveness of the disease itself. I felt as if it was so important for an occupational therapist to be a part of these patients' treatment at the clinic. The occupational therapist was able to advocate for them throughout this process and this was extremely important because some of the questions and areas that the patients needed support in matched up perfectly with the role of an occupational therapist. If the occupational therapist was not there to represent these individuals, they may have not gotten all of their questions answered at their visit. I feel as if occupational therapists are the perfect professionals to represent patients who are underrepresented or neglected in the medical system and that entry-level practitioners should always be prepared to stick up for their patients, no matter what setting they are in.
