Attached above is an article that I found when creating a group protocol on my second Level II Fieldwork at Park Center Emerging Adult Program. Each week, I created a group protocol and turned it into my fieldwork educator multiple days before I led the group. She would read it over and edit/correct what she though would increase the effectiveness of the group. In each group protocol, I had to provide an evidence-based article backing up the main topic of the group. This article also had to mention how participating in this topic would benefit those who have mental health diagnoses. This group in particular, I decided to create a group on relaxation strategies. Many of the members at Park Center had diagnoses that made it difficult for them to relax and let go of stressful situations so I decided that they would benefit from a group focused on this topic. However, I also was required find an article that backed up my decision. Attached above is the article I found and it explains how relaxation-based interventions lessened stress and depression in those that have mental health diagnoses. It also showed that it improved one's ability to utilize relaxation strategies and knowledge on stress management. Secondary to finding the evidence, I knew that this topic would be an effective and beneficial topic to implement a group on at Park Center. It is crucial that a future occupational therapy practitioner is evidence-based, but that they can also utilize their patient's values, wants, and needs into creating occupation-based and client-centered interventions.
