Using humor effectively while treating patients is something that is essential in order to be an entry-level occupational therapist. I believe that I used humor consistently over all three of my rotations. For example, throughout all of the groups that I led on my second Level II Fieldwork at Park Center Emerging Adult Program, I always used humor to entice the members and motivate them to want to participate in the group, especially since the ages of the members were 18-24 years old. For most of my groups, I came up with funny titles for the group and the activities within the group, such as “I’m Sensing Some Stress-Relief in Your Future” or “Snooze Clues." They always loved the titles for the groups. Sometimes at the beginning of groups, people were tired or grumpy of having to attend the group, and I felt as if announcing these titles at the beginning of the group loosened the members up and made them feel more comfortable and ready to participate in the group. I believe that an occupational therapist should be able to use humor when treating their patients, however they should also feel their patients out and decide if humor is a good tactic to use when treating.
